Lesson Four

This semester, I enrolled in a sculpture class. As I entered on my first day, I was a bit apprehensive. All throughout my life, my interest in art had been mostly focused on drawing. I'd never really done any work with my hands like sculpture, and I'd never really worked in 3D. So I was nervous. I didn't know if I would be any good at it, I didn't know if I was going to enjoy it at all, I didn't know if I was possibly about to fail spectacularly.

Fast forward to last Wednesday. I had just finished the wax portion of my sculpture (we're making sculptures in wax, then making molds out of them, melting out the wax and then pouring metal into the molds). Over the course of my working on it, I had been told several times, by both fellow students and other random people who wandered into our studio, that my sculpture was impressive and well-crafted. I can't tell you how great it made me feel to have done something like that with little experience.

So today's lesson: Push your limits!! You'll have no idea how it might turn out, but trust me, if you keep trying you'll eventually find something that you're really good at and you really like. This is also how I found my real passion: film. I took a video production class my senior year of high school on a whim, and I loved it. I knew that it was the medium I was supposed to be working in. So play around! Take a chance!

Quick Jenna update: She said she'd ask the doctor about that whooping cough thing. I asked her about the dreams too, but she said she didn't really remember them.

  1. Your sculpture project sounds really neat! Any chance you'll post pictures when it's done?

Personally, I keep really wanting to compose (I have a couple ideas floating around - my style's probably more minimalist), but I haven't really found the time. I'm also kind of worried I'll unintentionally steal melody lines from music I already know. I think once March is over with (busiest month of the semester for me), I'll give it a shot, see what I come up with.

Does Jenna have allergies? I know some people whose allergies are just hell this time of the year - awful coughing, sneezing, stuff like that. At the very least, you can try mucinex or a cough suppressant to help with the severity.

  2. I would love to see pictures of the finished sculpture, Ian!
I hope Jenna starts feeling better soon.

Personally I enjoy making digital fractal art and drawing. Painting isn't really my thing, but the abstract shapes fractals make are very interesting to me and lately I've just really enjoyed drawing.

  3. @Audrey- Yeah for sure, I'll post some pictures of the finished wax version and then the final version too. As for the music stuff, I'm a musician too, and when it comes to songwriting you just gotta go for it. You'll write a lot of crap but there'll be some good stuff in there. I think I've actually enjoyed maybe 1 out of every 5 songs I've written. As for Jenna, she hasn't had allergies as long as I've known her. I'm not sure if she's gone to the doctor or not yet, she hasn't been responding to my texts today.

@Daniel - you should post some links to some of your stuff on here sometime, I'd certainly love to see it.
